Blackjack (a.k.a. 21) is about getting a score higher than the house without exceeding 21, and ideally getting a blackjack.
There are many variations of blackjack, go through the guide below to know the terms and language to make a proper play in any situation. We hope you master this skill before stepping up to a blackjack table.
First things first:
Blackjack – also known as 21, which means that you need to add the first two cards you receive to 21. To do this, you need an ace and one of the 10 cards. Don’t worry too much about what the other players at the table are doing, because after all, you’re only playing against the dealer.
Basic rules for betting – In blackjack, there are always minimum and maximum bets. Let’s say you bet RM50. If you lose, the dealer gets your bet, but if you win, you get the RM50 and another RM50 from the dealer. If you draw, you keep your bet. And if you make a “blackjack”, you get to keep your original RM50, plus RM100 from the dealer because the ratio is 1.5 times bet.
Card values – Cards numbered 2 to 10 follow their face value. Jacks, Queens and Kings represent 10 points and Aces represent either 1 or 11 points.
Blackjack 3 to 2 – When you come across this term, it means that the player gets RM 3 for every RM 2 you bet. The odds of winning are slightly higher due to this standard practice.
Blackjack pays 6 to 5 – It’s normal if you think that you’ll get RM6 from the 6 to 5, and definitely it’s more profitable than 3 to 2. Rations are the most important thing to consider. In this case, 6 to 5 is actually smaller than 3 to 2, the house has great chances. And you might lose a lot of money because of it. So, be careful.
Blackjack pays 2 to 1 – You don’t see this often, because it actually gives the player better odds than the house. So, remember to make the most of it if you happen to come across a casino that offers this.
Hit versus Stand – Hit means asking for another card, while stand means sticking with your hand. If the sum of your first two cards is far from 21 points, you’ve a chance to get a hit. If you think you’ve collected enough points, decide to stand. Remember that you shouldn’t go beyond 21 points, otherwise your cards will “bust” and you’ll automatically lose.
Double – Double is when the player is confident that he’ll beat the dealer with his first two cards, the player tends to increase his initial bet by two times. For example, if you bet RM10 and get an 11, you can bet another RM10 and get another card.
Split – Split allows the player to split two identical cards into two separate hands by placing an additional bet equal to their original bet. For example, if you bet RM10 and receive two 8’s, for an additional RM10 you can split your hand into two hands, each with an 8, and play both hands simultaneously.
Surrender – Surrender means that you give up your cards before knowing what the dealer gets. If after receiving your first two cards you think your cards are bad, you can surrender. In this case, you can keep half of your original bet, while the dealer keeps the other half. This way, you’ll still lose half of your bet, so be careful not to give up too often.
Insurance – If the dealer shows an Ace, the player can make a side bet equal to half of his original bet. You will get paid 2 to 1 by having an insurance bet if the dealer has blackjack. If the dealer doesn’t have blackjack, you lose the insurance bet.
